Campervans Explained
Why Choose a Campervan Conversion?
For a lot of people the first thing they think of when they hear the word ‘campervan’ is the iconic 1960s VW Transporter, and while those classics still have their appeal, they’re compact to the point of being small by today’s standards. We’ve lost track of the number of customers who mentioned that they’d dismissed the idea of a campervan until they saw someone with one of our conversions in the wild.
Advances in engine technology and vehicle design mean that modern vans make better use of the space they have, which means our campervans give you much more room to play with, as well as being better equipped from the off – because we can build these better facilities in!
We believe a modern campervan conversion represents the best solution to the question of living life on the road, and we think the testimonials we’ve received speak to that.
How Hard is it to Drive a Campervan?
Converted campervans are no harder to drive than the vans they’re built out of. If you’ve only ever driven hatchbacks and saloons, it may take a little time to adjust to sitting higher in the road, and especially if you’re used to hatchbacks you’ll have to get used to driving a bigger vehicle. However, that’s something that comes easily with just a little practice.
If you’re not sure, consider asking our nearest dealer to you for a test drive, or you can inquire about our rental options to get a sense of them on a holiday before you buy.
Can I Sleep Well in a Campervan?
We believe life on the road should be as comfortable as life at home, with all the important creature comforts. A big part of that is being able to sleep well, so we take beds and blinds very seriously. The short answer is yes, you can get a good night’s sleep in a campervan.
What Vans Make the Best Campervans?
Over the years we’ve experimented with a lot of vans, and we’ve whittled the models we work with down to three; the Ford Transit, the Renault Trafic, and the modern VW Transporter – yes, the descendant of the famous ‘hippy van’, though we believe our conversions will give you a much better holiday!
You could say we’re biased toward those three, but we made our choice based on a combination of size, capacity, reliability, and how easy they are to work with.
What’s Better, a Campervan or a Motorhome?
There’s no getting away from it; motorhomes are bigger. In fact they’re some of the biggest private vehicles on the road, and they’re large enough that learning to handle them well takes a lot longer. Finding a place to park can also be trickier.
There’s been no comprehensive testing of which is better for mileage but when you compare comments from drivers of each made online, in forums, reddit, and the like, campervans have a much better MPG – going from around 30 to around 45.
We do have to admit to a bias on this question, but it’s also fair to say that a well-built motorhome can cope with more passengers. The choice may be made for you if you have a large family.
