In our last blog, we looked at some tips you’ll need if you’re putting your campervan away for the winter. We know many keen campervan drivers will be doing this, but we also know some of you will already be discussing your best options for a winter trip.
We thought we’d shine a spotlight on some great opportunities for travel in the winter. Some of these we’ve done ourselves, some we’ve heard about through customers either after they came back or while they were planning. We hope it gives you inspiration for your own.
Scottish Highland Adventure
Whether it’s visiting Aviemore for the skiing or spending a night near Loch Ness to drink in the sights with the fewest other people in view, the Scottish highlands are a completely different experience in winter, and provided you’ve got warm bedding and clothing, it’s a beautiful one.
We can’t recommend the NC500 for everyone in winter, though, as weather conditions can radically affect how easy your drive is on any given day. If you’re confident in your driving abilities and you’re prepared, it’s going to be an incredibly satisfying route.
National Trust Camping Sites Offer Beautiful Views
In fact, the National Trust website has an entire page dedicated to winter camping showing off some of the best options it makes available. A lot of National Trust locations have Christmas events running, so be sure to keep an eye out for these.
A particular standout is Castle Ward Caravan Park in County Down, but the Great Langdale Campsite in the Lake District is also spectacular.
Christmas Markets at Home and Abroad
There are plenty of great Christmas markets in the UK now, both small and large, and planning a short family trip to take in one that isn’t normally in reach would be a great weekender. Heading across the Channel into Germany, where the tradition really started to grow, might be a great seed for a longer winter trip.
Munich, Aachen, Stuttgart and Cologne are all particularly popular locations, but Nuremberg’s Christmas market (the Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt) is a real standout. A trip through the Black Forest for a fairytale experience could be punctuated by a day’s drive to Nuremberg, or that could be a stop on the way to or from.
Winter Sun
Lastly, don’t forget that getting into the sun is an option! Whether you’re enjoying yourself in Devon or Cornwall (St Ives is a great destination for winter surfing) or you head all the way down to the Mediterranean, your converted campervan gives you a perfect platform to launch off into warmer, sunnier weather. And who doesn’t love the idea of a Christmas in the sun?
If you need a new campervan before you put it to the test in the winter, our Ford, Renault, and Volkswagen options are all great whatever you need to do. Drop us a line and we’ll figure out how we can best support you.
